I think nikid said it best on the old site:

For those of you who have been living under a rock, and because it's too much to try and condense, here's generasia's bio on them:

    http://www.generasia.com/wiki/SCANDAL_(band)

The most recent SCANDAL news is that they're releasing a new compilation album called Encore Show in Feb, which will include on the LE a new PV of Satisfaction, and a video of a live outside Osaka Jou Hall. As with their last one, Scandal Show, this one will include Playboy, a song they used to do at their lives before they went big (although they did play it when they did Sakura-Con months before ShoujoS- I've seen the videos)

As I've said many times, when I first heard ShoujoS, I thought they were some girls singing group like AKB48...I'm glad I was wrong.

Aimi confirmed it at Anime Boston that they were good friends with the girls of Scandal, who attended Stepo's last live and were among the bands that gave them flowers.

Had their songs featured in anime- check.
Had famous musicians from Japan write songs FOR them- check.
    Played Budokan- check.
Have a whole group of people fighting over which one is the prettiest- check.

Not bad for a bunch of girls that thought they'd be dancers someday- although their videos do benefit from their Caless schooling.

any recommendation for their song? the one that I like was "Shunkan Sentimental", because of the 12 seconds opening, any other of the same?

A bunch of the members posted their faves from the previous Scandal thread:

    Exaita- Cute,Pride,Haruka,Namida no regret,Shojo S

    dereko- SCANDAL BABY, BeauTEEN, ShojoS

    Shikachu-

BEST SCANDAL: Aside from singles; SCANDAL BABY
Temptation Box: Aside from singles; Playboy part II
BABY ACTION: Aside from singles; BURN, Tokyo Skyscraper

arcluna- Sono Toki, Sekai wa Kimi Darake no RAIN

    My personal recommendations:

BEST SCANDAL: Koi Muyo, SCANDAL Baby, RingRingRing!, Space Ranger, Kagerou
Temptation Box: Everybody Say Yeah!, Hi-Hi-Hi, and GirLism.
Baby Action: Glamourous you, Sono Toki, Sekai wa Kimi Darake no RAIN, Tokyo Skyscraper, Sparkling, Appletachi no Degon, BURN (they could have released Baby Action without the singles and I'd probably still get it)

Singles: Shoujou S, Shuukan Sentimental, Pride, Doll.

My favorite B-sides from singles: Koshi-tantan, S.L. Magic, and BEAUTEEN!

Oh, and they outdid themselves on Queens are Trumps. It's another album I'd get even if the singles weren't on it. '

More recently, I liked Taiyou Scandalous and Harukaze, but Pinheel Surfer could have been better in my opinion. Scandal Nanka Buttobase is also really good (They did the dance live at Budokan with the video playing in the background)

Despite being a Mod here on a Stereopony site, I think Scandal's marketing people do a better job of making their US fans happy. Put simply, Blu-Ray Discs.

    Video Action, Blu-Ray.
    Budokan, Blu-Ray.

Stereopony, no Blu-Ray, not even for their FINAL live.

The reason I bring this up is because of region codes. Japan and the US have the same Region code, which means I can put it the family Blu-Ray player and watch Scandal in all their glory on the big TV, instead of just on my Laptop with Japanese DVDs.

All in all, you really can't go wrong anywhere with Scandal. :)

Hmm... you might want to add a picture and some more information about SCANDAL too. But then again, I'm pretty sure everyone knows who SCANDAL is by now if they're a Stereopony fan. haha.

Picture and link to bio updated in starting post. I wanted to write something before, but I couldn't figure out how to condense it enough to spell out the basics, and many of our members are also from Scandal Heaven, and like you said, everyone knows who Scandal is if they're Stereopony fans. :)

Encore Show got Oricon #1 on Tuesday! Hopefully they can hold on for the weekly #1 too.

I asked a friend in Japan to help me buy it from Tsutaya because I wanted the Mami poster, and he said that it was sold out at several locations in Osaka. That's a good sign!

    They're baaaaaaack!

Their newest single, 「会わないつもりの、元気でね」Awanai Tsumori no, Genki de ne, is coming out on May 22. Three versions, as usual, the A version has an instructional DVD of some kind from the members and the B version has entire footage of their guerrilla live the night before Osaka-Jo Hall dream live.

And for some reason Mami's hair is purple now...

Okay, bumping this topic to see if we can get a discussion going.

Both of the songs on Scandal's latest single, Awanai Tsumori no, Genki de ne, are written by people other than the girls.

Harukaze, Pinheel Surfer, Taiyou Scandalous, to name a few, were also written by other musicians, granted Pinheel Surfer was written by Triceratops and Taiyou Scandalous was by Naoto of Orange Range, but still, not the girls.

I'm not PICKING on Scandal or singling them out, I'm simply using them as an example because from the beginning because many of their songs have been written in in part or entirely by someone other than Haruna, Mami, Tomomi, or Rina. They have started to take an active role in writing the music as well, not just the lyrics, but they're the only band that comes to mind to have help from staff people or outside musicians. Granted, it's an honor for some established, well known artist or group to come up to your group and say, "Here, I wrote a song for you." But I still feel that as much as the girls try to make it their own through their singing and playing style, as long as they're not writing the lyrics, it's not their "voice" coming across.

So what do you guys think about this?

personally, i like songs that is written by the girls more.
but, i don't mind if they also have many songs that is not written by them.

just like you're singing a song that you likes (the lyrics).
you like it, you feel like that (or whatever). you'll sing it from your heart too right?

    yea, kinda like that.

If you want some more discussion, come to SCANDAL HEAVEN! There has been some good stuff written about this and similar topics, including from people with experience playing in bands and with better understanding of the music industry than mine.

I have been a bit disappointed that their recent singles did not have lyrics written by a member. Before Pin Heel Surfer, all of their singles except for Nanka Buttobase had at least some involvement by a member in writing lyrics. (Although, all of them also have another person credited as well, most likely to help with crafting a song that would have wider appeal.) I was especially disappointed by Pin Heel Surfer, because the song is supposed to be a "cheer song" for girls, but the lyrics were written by a guy. At least most of the B-sides had member-written lyrics.

As for composing songs, SCANDAL has never focused on member-composed songs; they're sort of a bonus put on singles and albums. Some of them are my favorite SCANDAL songs overall, like Bitter Chocolate and Emotion. The members are just not experienced enough in music to be able to write many songs that will appeal to a wide audience and sell well. I also believe that when they collaborate with other established artists, they work together to find something that will fit SCANDAL's sound. Not necessarily be something they've done before, but still fit their style well enough to be recognizable. Rina has blogged many times about composing at least parts of songs, so they should have at least some say in the creative process.

This doesn't take anything away from their incredible talents for singing, playing their instruments, and putting on awesome rocking lives. And especially how quickly they learned and how they are still improving. It's just part of their nature to be a little more mainstream with their pop rock sound, and that requires a team to help them. That's really just how the Japanese music industry works, and why they have been more commercially successful and are more well-known than Stereopony or FLiP.

    Very good points, Geo.

I'm a little disappointed to. I mean, if some established musician, Western or Japanese comes along and says they'd like to write a song for you, what are you gonna do, turn them down?

I've never really seen the songs the girls write themselves to be bonuses per se...but it seems a little weird sometimes that someone else has to write the actual music for them when they went to music school! Yeah, they went for dance, but I'd think there's some kinda curriculum that everyone had to do. Yet all our two current and one former Okinawan band headliners can do both and all they need is someone more experienced to fine tune it.

Although yes, Rina does and has penned songs and musical notes for her "sisters". (She's always intrigued me, like how she manages to balance cute and hot at the same time, be happy after a multi-hour flight, and write deep meaningful songs when I'm convinced her head's full of rainbows and ponies and all sorts of other sugary stuff)

Yeah, and why do you let a group of guys write you a "girl cheer" song? Then again Naoto managed to write a "girls at the pool/beach" anthem and he's a guy.

We need Nanae or Nohana to write them a song like that because the two happiest members on Scandal write the deepest songs.

Regardless, I still love Scandal, and very happy their commercialism gets me Blu-Rays of their shows!

I am pretty excited for those new cds! I am experiencing a first world problem because of them though. Each cd comes with a first press bonus of a poster, but I already have too many poster. I will have to beat myself up over which old poster to retire to make room for the new ones :(. I actually saw SCANDAL live in Japan a couple of months ago. It was phenomenal- if you ever at all get the chance to see them, do it!
